CA Glue FAQs

What is CA glue, and how is it different from regular super glue?

CA glue is short for cyanoacrylate, the same chemistry as household super glue. It cures when it meets the trace moisture on almost any surface, which is why it grabs in seconds.

The difference is in how it's packaged and how much control you get. Woodworking and hobby CA glue comes in larger bottles, from about 0.8oz to 1.75oz instead of a tiny tube, with precision tips. It's offered in specific viscosities (thin, medium and thick) and is usually paired with an activator spray, so you choose how fast and how deep the glue works instead of taking whatever the tube gives you.

Thin, medium or thick CA glue: which one do I need?

  • Thin: water-like, and wicks into hairline cracks by capillary action. Use it for tight-fitting joints, stabilizing soft or punky wood, inlays, and fixing cracks you can barely see.
  • Medium: the all-rounder. It stays where you put it but still penetrates a little. Use it for most repairs, trim, miters, and bonding wood to metal or plastic.
  • Thick (gel): doesn't run. It bridges small gaps in loose-fitting joints and works on vertical or overhead surfaces, and it gives you a few extra seconds to position parts.

If you're not sure, start with medium. If you do a mix of work, the IxirPro Master Kit has all three viscosities in one set.

Do I need a CA glue activator, and does it work with any brand?

You don't strictly need one, but it changes how you work. Without an activator, CA glue can take 30 seconds to a few minutes to set, and longer on wood, which is slightly acidic and slows the cure. With a light mist of activator, the bond sets in about 5 to 10 seconds and you skip clamping. The activator also helps prevent blooming, the white haze that can form around a joint.

The IxirPro and Magic Chems activator sprays work with thin, medium and thick CA glue from any brand. A light mist is enough: too much activator makes the glue cure hot and brittle, and can leave it foamy.

What won't CA glue stick to?

CA glue bonds well to wood, metal, most hard plastics, ceramic, stone, rubber and leather. It struggles on low-energy plastics such as polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), Teflon and silicone. If a plastic feels waxy and flexes easily, expect a weak bond.

It's also not the right choice for large joints that need to flex, or for parts that will be submerged or exposed to high heat for long periods. For specific repairs, the Y'allCanDIY range includes glues made for one job, such as plastic and 3D prints, shoe soles and ceramic.

How do I keep CA glue from clogging or going bad?

  • After each use, squeeze the bottle gently to clear glue from the tip, wipe the nozzle with a dry cloth and recap right away.
  • If a tip clogs, soak the cap and nozzle in acetone or swap in a fresh microtip. Don't push a pin through it while the cap is on the bottle.
  • Store bottles upright in a cool, dry place, out of direct sun.
  • Unopened bottles keep about 12 months at room temperature, and 24 months or more in the refrigerator. Let a cold bottle reach room temperature before opening it, or condensation inside will start curing the glue.

Once opened, use the bottle within 6 to 12 months. If the glue turns stringy or noticeably thicker than when you bought it, it has started to cure in the bottle and won't bond reliably.

How do I get CA glue off my skin or a surface?

On skin, don't pull bonded fingers apart. Soak the area in warm, soapy water, then gently roll or peel the skin apart. An acetone-based nail polish remover dissolves cured CA glue faster. Most leftover glue wears off by itself within a day or two.

On hard surfaces, acetone softens cured glue so you can scrape it off, but it can also damage paint, finishes and some plastics, so test it on a hidden spot first. If CA glue gets in your eyes, flush with water for at least 15 minutes and seek medical attention. In the U.S., Poison Control is available at 1-800-222-1222.
